What can I do about problem neighbours?

If it's possible, neighbours should really try to resolve any problems between themselves. People are not always aware that they, their children or even their visitors are causing a nuisance or a disturbance to others. Your neighbours may be reasonable if you put it to them that they are causing you problems.

Here are some tips:

  • Do have a think about what you want to say to your neighbour before you approach them
  • Do try to stay calm and friendly - starting off in an aggressive or accusing way is not going to help the situation
  • Do explain clearly what the problem is, how it affects you and how it makes you feel
  • Do listen to what your neighbour has to say and think about what they have said - they have a point of view as well!
  • Don't shout or lose your temper - try to stay calm and in control
  • Don't argue over what has already happened - try to look forward to how things could be better
  • Do walk away if your neighbour is unreasonable or becomes abusive

Some neighbour disputes can be resolved at an early stage and involving mediation can help to overcome disagreements. Dundee Community Mediation is a free, confidential and independent service to all Dundee residents. Mediators do not take sides and are trained to help neighbours find their own solutions to problems.

You can contact Dundee Community Mediation on 01382 459252 or e-mail them at info@dundee.sacro.org.uk
