PHOTOPOLIS
Living and Working in Dundee, 1900-1925

Photopolis is a major photographic digitisation programme undertaken by Dundee City Council. A selection of quality photographs from various collections in the Central Library and the City Archives is being digitised to a high resolution. This will enable the Council to make large numbers of historical photographs available over the Internet in Community Libraries, the City Archives, and other venues. They will also be presented over the SCRAN Network for use by the education community.

The two collections concerned are the 1916 Dundee Photographic Survey and Dundee Corporation Sanitary Department's illustrations of slum dwellings (c.1915-1925).

Photopolis II

"Photopolis II" will see the digitisation of approximately 4000 glass negatives from the Wilson Collection (c.1880-1905), together with a selection from the 1991 Photographic Survey, which was commissioned in celebration of Dundee's Octocentenary in 1991.

Photopolis will help to educate our children about Dundee's past as a thriving industrial city, illustrating economic success hand in hand with deprivation, generate pride in what has been achieved and instil a sense of identity. To those who remember Dundee as it was many years ago, the photographs will evoke memories of times past, nurture a pride in the City's heritage, and provide an historical context for planning the City's future.

Photographs to be digitised in the Photopolis project can be viewed - subject to availability - in the Local Studies department of the Central Library, and in the City Archives.

Dundee City Council gratefully acknowledges financial assistance granted by SCRAN (Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network) towards the costs of the Photopolis Project.
