William McGibbon b. c.1690 d. 1756

Scottish composer and violinist, who was born and died in Edinburgh. He studied music in London and for twenty years was principal violinist with the Edinburgh Musical Society Orchestra.

He wrote sonatas in various forms, music for flute and for solo fiddle, the latter based on Scottish folktunes.

His musical composition was large but disappointing for one who was clearly talented. Many of his works are either no longer extant, or incomplete and their availability is limited.
