Digital Mapping / GIS
What is Digital Mapping?
“The representation of cartographic images in alphanumeric form such that they can be manipulated and represented using computer systems”
In plain English, Digital Mapping is a computer-based mapping system which will eventually replace the paper-based system used by the Council. It allows users to display and manipulate mapping information more quickly, effectively and efficiently, allowing analysis of geographical information.
The Director of Economic Development is Dundee City Council’s Ordnance Survey Liaison Officer and the Estates Division of the Department manages the corporate digital mapping system for Ordnance Survey map production.
Whilst the Economic Development Department cannot provide members of the public with extracts from the systems, A4 extract copies may be obtained from the Planning & Transportation Department, for the purpose of applying for Planning Consent and Building Warrant. A fee is payable for this service.
What is GIS?
“Geographical Information System which works with digital mapping to allow information and spatial data to be interrogated and maintained
on a digital map base”.
The Geographical Information System allows Council users to retrieve and maintain information on a digital map, such as property records, using a computer rather than the old hard copy map system.
This information is provided by the Economic Development Department
