EMA General Information
The Educational Maintenance Allowance scheme is a Scottish Government initiative administered by Dundee City Council Education Department. The scheme is intended to encourage young people to stay in further education to gain qualifications that will enhance their job prospects.
What is an EMA?
An EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) is a weekly allowance payable to eligible students who stay on at school after compulsory education. It is payable in arrears on a 2 weekly basis providing the student has achieved a 100% attendance for each week and has made suitable progress and good conduct.
Do you qualify for an EMA?
- Were you born between 1 March 1991 and 28 February 1995?
- Do you attend a school in the Dundee City Council area?
- Do you attend school for a minimum of 21 hours guided learning per week?
- Are you willing to participate in an approved learning agreement at school?
- Is your household income £20,351* per annum or less?

Students attending full-time at college may also be eligible for EMA but should contact the college direct for further details or to obtain an application form.
How to Apply for an EMA
Application forms are available from the following points:
- Floor 2, Tayside House
- Dundee City Council Housing Offices (East and West areas)
- Any Dundee City Council Secondary School – from start of new term in August 2010.
