Elections to the European Parliament - 4th June 2009
Between 4th and 7th June member states of the European Union will go to the polls to elect members of the European Parliament (MEP's)
The UK poll will take place on Thursday 4th June between 7am and 10pm. 72 MEP's will be elected of which 6 will be from the Scotland Electoral Region.
The result of the Election cannot be announced until close of poll in all member states ie 9pm on Sunday 7th June.
The Regional Returning Officer has overall responsibility for the election but Local Returning Officers are responsible for the conduct of the poll in their local area. The Local Returning Officer for Dundee is The Chief Executive of Dundee City Council.
At this Election political parties put forward a list of candidates (The Regional List).
Individual candidates not affiliated to any political party can also stand. The ballot paper will bear the names of parties and of any individual candidates.
To vote you simply place a cross (X) against the party or individual candidate of your choice.
Ballot papers will be counted locally and the results sent to the Regional Returning Officer who will then carry out the required calculations to determine the 6 Scottish MEP's. The result is likely to be announced on Monday 8th June.
