Dundee City Council Food Waste Trial 2011–2012
Background
Scotland's first zero waste plan was published in June 2010 and was followed by a period of public consultation which ended in November 2010. The results of the consultation were issued in February 2011 and they included draft regulations on the how best to deliver the objectives contained within the Zero Waste Plan. The proposed regulations recommend separating recyclable materials at source and introduce phased bans on certain materials into landfill sites and energy from waste facilities (EfW).
Food waste is specifically targeted within the regulations due to the environmental benefits of managing it separately from other waste types and because of this the draft regulations require all Scottish Local Authorities to collect food waste separately from all other wastes with effect from 2013.
In anticipation of these draft regulations being passed, it has been decided to run a trial in Dundee where food waste will be collected separately from other waste. The trial will last for 12 months with the first collections starting in September 2011.
The trial will include approximately 2800 properties and will cover a mix of property types in 10 different areas across the city. The findings of the trial will be used to make future decisions regarding a city-wide phased rollout of this service in line with the draft regulation timescales.
