What is a smartcard?

A smartcard is a computer on a credit card sized piece of plastic. As with a computer, there is a processor and memory in the card, but you don’t need any computer skills – the card does it all for you! The smartcard’s processor and memory takes the form of a small microchip which is embedded in the card. This microchip can be more or less powerful depending on the services you wish to access with the card and works by introducing the card to a suitable card reader.
