Feedback and Data Protection

Where name and contact details of the referrer are provided with the referral, the Council will acknowledge receipt of the referral.

In order to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, the Council will not be able to provide any feedback information to the public on what action is taken on the referral or the outcome of any investigation, as to give information to a third party would be a contravention of the Act.

However, the council will be able to provide feedback where appropriate that will assist the referrer in referring cases in the future. For example, if a referrer is vague in the information they have provided, it is likely that the section will not have been able to progress to investigation. The Counter-Fraud Section must be able to justify taking on an investigation and cannot do so based on just hearsay or non-specific information on the off-chance that there may be something going on. In this instance, the Benefit Assistant carrying out the Referral Quality Assessment will advise the referrer about the need for as much specific information as possible to be provided in future.

By working together, we will ensure that we maximise the take-up of referrals to our given capacity.
