The Gates Project

‘Learning Together Through Reminiscence’

Do you know where in the Hilltown you used to buy a 'Sarsparalli?
What were you eating when you had a 'Buster' ?

If you remember, then tell us your story! Workers from the Communities Department Project, 'Learning Together Through Reminiscence' which focuses on the Hilltown area of Dundee, would like to hear from you, your family or friends.

For the last two years the Gates Project has been based at Coldside Community Library and workers have gathered information from residents of the Hilltown, capturing the reminiscences of older people in the locality, including those who are housebound, living in sheltered housing units and who visit care centres and clubs in the area.

Computers, tape recorders and other useful items of equipment were purchased and were used by both Project Workers and local folk to record memories of community life in the Hilltown in times past. This information has been collated, edited and used to create these web pages which we hope you will enjoy browsing through!

Project Workers have been busy providing introductory computer training for those participants who wished to learn more about modern technology
using the new computer suite at Coldside Community Library. In the Autumn of 2002 we linked up with primary-aged children, sharing old memories and new learning experiences between the generations.

Although the Project has now been completed as scheduled, if you live in the Hilltown and would like to tell us your memories of your community and life-style in days gone by, please contact us. Perhaps a member of your family, or friends would like to contribute? We can arrange to meet with you, or, if you would like to write down your stories, please send or hand them in to us.

The Department also published a book, using the reminiscence material and pictures taken from the archive collection of photographs of Old Dundee (Photopolis). This may be purchased from any library at £2.50 per copy.
