Dundee City Council is committed to delivering a variety of older people's services that allow individuals to live independently in their communities. This commitment is reflected in the range of older people's housing provided by the Council.

Sheltered Housing
This type of housing is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are aged 60 or over.
 

The majority of houses are located either on the ground or first floor. Housing above two storeys is serviced by a lift.

The key features of sheltered housing are:

  • a central heating system provided in each house
  • lowered light switches and raised electrical sockets
  • a warden service
  • an emergency community alarm service
  • communal lounge facilities
  • laundry facilities

Very Sheltered Housing
This type of housing is designed to meet the needs of frail older people who require additional support to live independently.

The service has all the features of sheltered housing along with the following additional support provision:

  • located in purpose built sheltered housing complexes
  • controlled entry access to complexes
  • dining facilities with meals provision
  • cleaning of common areas
  • specially equipped bathrooms which allow assisted bathing

Housing is located on the ground and upper floors. Accommodation above ground floor is serviced by a lift.

Housing With Care
This type of housing is for individuals who are 60 years of age and over who require care and support to maintain their independence. It has all the features of very sheltered housing with the addition of an onsite care team, which provides the necessary care and support to tenants.

Other Service Users
People who are under the age of 60 with medical needs or disabilities can apply for older people's housing.
 

In these situations the housing, support and care needs of each applicant would be assessed. The assessment would clarify the suitability of the accommodation to meet the needs of individual applicants.
