Health Development

The Leisure and Communities Department plays an active part in a variety of partnership initiatives operating throughout Dundee. Aiming to improve the health and well being of people in the city and promoting the advantages of a healthy lifestyle for all, the Department and its partners support projects and teams who deliver health information, advice and support, especially to the children and young people of Dundee.

The Corner

The Corner provides a wide range of confidential health and information services for young people in Dundee aged from 11 to 25 years through the city centre 'drop in' facility and also through outreach work in local communities. Information is available, individual support is on hand - it is a priority to ensure that young people find it easy to get the service they need! The Corner has a charitable status and is a partnership between the Leisure and Communities Department, Tayside NHS Board, the Scottish Government and young people.

The Shore

The Shore is a dynamic, safe, city centre meeting place for young people aged from 11 to 18 years. Young people have had a high level of influence in creation of the Shore and there is a diverse range of exciting activities on offer. Open Doors Sessions include arts and multi-media, music management and development (MMAD), drug and alcohol free time (DAFT), sound engineering and D.J. workshops. The Shore is funded by Xplore Social Inclusion Partnership and the Scottish Government Quality of Life Fund.

The Peer Education Project

The Peer Education Project provides an opportunity to increase young peoples' knowledge of drugs and alcohol as well as equipping them with skills to make positive choices and deal with difficult situations. The role of young people as peer educators has also included radio skills training, Youth Achievement Awards, video and film making. The Project is supported through mainstream funding, Tackling Drugs Misuse, Lloyds TSB Foundation, Dundee Drugs and Alcohol Action Team and SIP funding.

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative is a partnership project funded by the New Opportunities Fund, SIPS, Dundee City Council and NHS Tayside.

The Dundee Healthy Living Initiative Team, which consists of Community Health Workers and Community Health Nurses, tackles health inequalities in designated areas in the city, using a community development approach. The key aims of the project are to

  • Develop health initiatives and activities that respond to community health issues
  • Provide local health advice and information
  • Help bring health services into the community
  • Ensure community health needs influence policy and service development

Activities the Project supports include cooking skills courses, exercise classes, health information points, health checks and stress management sessions. The development of Health Forums brings together local people and partner organisations to agree collective action on identified health needs and priorities.

If you would like further information, contact the Dundee Healthy Living Manager on 435824.

The Leisure and Communities Department also provides information about a wide range of health practitioners in Dundee, chemists which will be open on a Sunday or public holiday and links to useful health information at national level.
