Hilltown - Soft Statistics and Funding Allocation

Hilltown has large pockets of deprivation and comes into the worst 15% category therefore the area is subject to additional funding from the Scottish Government.  Click on the image at the top right-hand corner to view a map of the area.

The Better Neighbourhood Services initiative has been providing funds for environmental improvements, community safety and community engagement projects.

Hilltown is also part of the Central cluster for Community Regeneration Funding.

Economic inactivity in the Hilltown

There are several significant figures of interest for this area. For example, the unemployment figure was registered as 8.7%, standing 3.3% above the Dundee average of 5.4%.  However within the economically inactive figure of 87.5% (47.6% above the Dundee average) are sub-sections that sick, recorded as 10.5% of the total.  This figure was 5.9% above the Dundee average of 4.6%.  Other significant figures reveal that the retired accounted for 9.3% of the economically inactive in the area, 5.5% below the Dundee average of 14.8%.  Equally, the highest represented age group in the area were withint the 25-49 band with 35.9%, 2.8% above the Dundee average of 33.1%.  The 19-24 band also stood at 15.7%, 5.2% above the city average of 10.5%. Hence the ward's population was disproportionately younger, with 51.6% of the population categorised as between 17 and 49 years of age. The area also recorded a substantial Pakistani/Asian population at 4.43%, 2.8% above the city average of 1.63%

Equally, household figures reveal that 46.7% of residents within the ward live alone, 8.4% above the city average of 38.3%. Looked at in more detail, 11.7% of residents are also lone parents with children, 2.9% above the city average. 17.6% are pensioner only households, but this figure is 7.7% below the city average. Thus key observations can be derived from these figures.
