Area and Boundary Description

The communities of Mill O' Mains and Dalclaverhouse have the boundary of Forfar Road to the east, Claverhouse Road to the south, the Trottick area to the west and the City Council boundary to the north. Click on the image at the top right-hand corner to view a map of the area.

Brief History of the Area

The Dighty Burn which runs along the boundary provided a range of industrial uses in the 19th and early 20th century.  Several mills and ponds were used for the preparation of flax and latterly jute.  The name Mill of Mains refers to a mill which was positioned in the area. A regenerated mill is still in evidence at the foot of Barns of Claverhouse Road. The Trottick Ponds environmental area is a development of the existing ponds which have been upgraded to provide a haven for wildlife in the area. House building in the Dalclaverhouse area started in the early 20th century with the creation of workers houses for the mills.  A mansion was built in the area and over time the owner created a development of houses in the late 1960s. These houses have been added to in the Dalclaverhouse area over the last ten years with major developments in the Emmock Woods, Heron Rise and John Graham Avenue areas.

By contrast Mill O' Mains is a typical Local Authority build area which was constructed in the early 1970s. This community was a mixed tenure development with flats, maisonettes and semi detached/terraced housing. Over recent years a number of flatted properties have been demolished which has created open space and park land in the community. A recent housing at risk strategy, instigated by the Housing Department, identified a number of other properties for demolition. This will free up further space for environmental improvements.
