Mitchell Street Adult Learning Team

The Team offers tuition in the following:

  • literacy and numeracy groups for those who would like to improve their skills in reading, writing, spelling and number work.
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for adults whose first language is not English.

Literacy and Numeracy Groups

We run small groups for people who would like to improve their reading, writing, spelling or numbers. Some examples include:

  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills
  • Spelling
  • Basic Maths
  • Arithmetic
  • Coping with Dyslexia
  • Handling Money
  • SQA Modules
  • Reading Books and Newspapers
  • Measuring and Weighing
  • Letter writing/form filling
  • Helping with Homework
  • Preparation for entry tests for police, fire service, armed forces etc.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Provision is available for adults whose first language is not English and who are living in this country or will be staying here for a number of years. Classes are offered to suit learners' needs and deal with speaking, reading and writing in English for everyday tasks.

The classes are at various levels from beginner to lower intermediate. There are separate classes for women and men, as well as mixed classes.

Will there be other people like me?

Yes. One in five adults have difficulty with reading, writing and maths. Learners are of all ages and come from all over Dundee.

What happens in the Centre?

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. After a chat with a member of the team, tuition will be arranged to suit your need. Learning takes place in small groups available from Monday to Friday, including some evenings.

How much does it cost?

All of our provision is free, and we can offer childcare in our creche.

General Information

There is free access to computers and the Internet at all times in the public open area.

We welcome people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties.
