Working with Children and Young People

Our Department engages with young people wherever they are, but mainly in Community Centres, Libraries and dedicated youth projects. Work with young people is centred on their personal and social development.

Typically, a Centre will programme evening youth club or 'drop in' facilities for the 11 to 18 year old age group, with the aim of providing good quality opportunities for young people, supported by skilled staff in a safe environment.

Within Dundee City Council our department has the lead role in:

Outdoor adventure activities safety management
Services for young people from ethnic minorities
Youth Information Services
Homework clubs in Community Libraries

We provide the opportunity for young people to have their learning, development and achievements recognised through four informal accreditation formats.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Young people aged from 14 to 25 follow a programme of a chosen sport, a hobby, service in the community and expeditions.

Young Quality Scot

An award which recognises and rewards young people who are active in their communities through voluntary work.

Youth Achievement Award

Programmes of personal and social development and special interest devised individually by young people aged from 14 to 20. They set themselves challenges and assess each other. Evidence of learning and development is displayed through portfolio building.

Natural Connections

Fun and achievement outdoors. An opportunity to accredit outdoor learning programmes.

We also link in with different projects such as Xplore - a project supporting young people who may be finding it hard to cope at school, home, work or within their community. You can view the latest annual report of the Explore Project here.

HandsOnScotland

The HandsOnScotland Website is an online resource for anybody working with children and young people. It is a one-stop shop for practical information and techniques on how to respond helpfully to children and young people’s troubling behaviour, build up their self-esteem and promote their positive mental wellbeing.

The website was commissioned by the Scottish government through Heads up Scotland and was developed by Playfield Institute (NHS Fife) in partnership with Barnardo’s and the University of Dundee.

Youth Information Services

Provides access to information to allow young people to make informed life choices
Ensures information is relevant, up to date and in a format which is attractive to young people
Delivers in settings where young people feel comfortable
Provides opportunities for young people to engage with technology through the Dundee pages of the Young Scot portal
Supports the Young Scot element of the young persons National Entitlement Card (previously the Discovery card) through the delivery of Young Scot packs in schools and ongoing membership benefits (such as retailer discounts) to young people aged 12–18 years
Provides opportunities for young people via www.youngscot.org/dundee to inform decision making at a local and national level
