Arranging the Funeral
Always check the person's will, if there is one, to see if it contains any specific requests about the funeral arrangements. If the death has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal, do not make final funeral arrangements until you know when the funeral can go ahead.
- Paying for the funeral - Remember that if you arrange the funeral, you are responsible for paying for it, so make sure there is enough money and check where it will come from. Sometimes you can be eligible for funeral payment benefits from the Department of Work and Pensions, or the deceased might have taken out a pre-paid funeral plan.
- Finding a funeral director - If the widow / widower is too distraught to organise the funeral, the task usually falls to a sibling, child or family solicitor. The first task will be to find a reputable funeral director, who will take on all the arrangements, after registration by an executor or the next of kin. The undertaker will arrange for payment of all fees, such as cemetery or crematorium, minister, organist and choir. Members of the National Association of Funeral Directors are bound by a code of practice to issue an itemised estimate and subsequent account.
