If someone dies at home

  • Call the family doctor. If body parts or organs are to be donated then mention this now.
  • Contact the nearest relatives
  • Contact the police if the death was unexpected, accidental, violent or the cause of death is not known. Until they arrive do not touch or move anything.
  • Contact the minister of religion.
  • You have 8 days to register the death

If someone dies in hospital

  • The charge nurse or police will contact the nearest relative or next of kin
  • Identify the body if the person was not a patient of the hospital
  • Consider allowing a post-mortem
  • Bring the correct documents so that any personal possessions can be taken away
