Personal safety can also include the fraudulent use of your personal details. That's why the next pages look at protecting ourselves online, from scams, phishing and identity theft.

If you find you're being swamped by junk mail or from telephone sales then get in contact with the Mail and Telephone Preference Services. Alternatively if you suffer from silent calls - the telephone rings but there's no one there when you answer - then register with Silent Call Guard.

Some basic tips include: When you answer the phone, simply say 'Hello'. Don't give your number. Never reveal any information about yourself to a stranger and never say you are alone in the house. Use only your surname and initials in the telephone directory and on your door.
