Securing Your Home
Many burglaries can be prevented - most are committed by opportunist thieves. Burglars like easy opportunities. They don't like locked windows as they have to break glass, they don't like security deadlocks on doors, since they can't open them.
Check the security of your home against the advice on these pages. A small financial outlay will, in many cases, make your home much more secure.
One piece of advice: If you see signs of a break-in at your home, don't go in. The burglar(s) may still be inside. Go to a neighbour's house and call the police.
- Shelter Scotland also has tips and advice on keeping your home secure.
Protecting your home doesn't just mean from other people, accidents do happen and fire has the potential to cause a great deal more damage than a thief.
Tayside Fire Brigade offer FREE home safety checks. This includes the installation of free or replacement smoke detectors or alarms if necessary. To arrange a FREE Home Fire Safety Visit, telephone 0300 123 9998, or text "Check" to 61611 or contact your local fire station.
Postcoding your Property
Your postcode and house number can enable you to identify your property, should it be stolen. There are several ways to do this including engraving or etching, using an ultra violet marking pen, a ceramic marking pen, or punching into heavier items.
Where you mark your property is important - particularly if you use the engraving method. If you want the mark to be out of sight, choose somewhere behind or underneath the article - but not somewhere so hidden that the police would not be able to find it.
