Cyclists see the light
CYCLISTS in Dundee will be better equipped to avoid the hazards they face thanks to the installation of new solar lighting on the city's cycle paths.
A £130,000 project to install ground based solar powered uplighters has recently started on a section of the route at Ninewells Hospital.
Convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee Will Dawson said: "These solar powered lights have been designed and developed specifically to help cyclists on cycle paths during the hours of darkness.
"They have a number of benefits. They are totally sustainable so use no
fossil fuels to operate, they reduce the potential for accidents and in doing
so encourage more people to use their bikes on the well lit and safe cycle
ways, which in turn improves health."
The project is part of Dundee Travel Active (DTA) which has already created a wide-ranging programme to improve the local environment and infrastructure for walkers and cyclists to help boost wellbeing.
Led by Dundee City Council, the scheme is backed by the Scottish Government's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places initiative for three years, and supported by a wide range of public and private bodies, including NHS Tayside.
Focussing on Stobswell, Hilltown and the West End, DTA encourages people to travel on foot, by bike, public transport or in shared cars.
Tayside Contracts, which is carrying out the work, has already installed the lights in more than a mile of cycle path stretching from Stannergate to Broughty Ferry.
According to the manufacturers, Astucia, a few hours of clear daylight will provide enough battery power to last ten days, more than enough to ensure that the system keeps working in any weather.
