Kennel Keys

KEYS FOR the £250,000 replacement for Dundee's Brown Street kennels have been handed over to Dundee City Council.

Contractors have now officially finished building work at the site of the former kennels which were demolished and cleared late last year.

To mark the occasion, convener of Dundee City Council's environment services committee, George Regan received the keys of the new facility today (MONDAY).

He said: "Dundee City Council has operated a successful dog control policy for more than 30 years, and Brown Street kennels has been at its heart.

"Now with the completion of this replacement facility it will resume that place for many years to come.

"The new facility has been totally custom-built for purpose with kennels for 15 dogs as well as a vet's room, reception, office and other accommodation, all in a single storey building."

Local contractors, George Martin Builders carried out the work, which started in January this year.

A planned refurbishment of Brown Street kennels was stopped in February 2007 when the converted warehouse building that housed the dogs was found to be in a dangerous condition.

Councillors agreed to build a replacement with accommodation for 15 strays in October.

Brown Street has been home to the city's kennels since the mid-seventies during which time more than 35,000 dogs have been through its doors.

The three full-time and one part-time employees have been performing other duties in the environmental health and trading standards team while the work was carried out, but transferred to working in the new kennels at the weekend.

While the kennels have been out of action, dogs that would have been looked after at Brown Street have been boarded at kennels outwith the city

Details about any dog can still be found on www.dundeecity.gov.uk/kennels  or by phoning 432100.
