Scores On The Doors

A national scheme to provide consumers with information about hygiene standards could be set to be backed by Dundee City Council.

A report to the council's housing, Dundee Contract Services and environment services committee on Monday (August 25) recommends approval of a response to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The agency's proposals would involve a "Scores on the Doors" scheme that would assess businesses against compliance with legal requirements.

Committee convener Councillor George Regan said: "The FSA are consulting on the best system to be adopted to give consumers information about standards of hygiene found by inspectors at food business premises.

"Pilot schemes have been running, but this new proposal is for a national scheme and a couple of options are put forward for local authorities to comment on - a four-tier one working on a points system and a two-tier scheme - which is being recommended as the best option - based on the Scottish pilot.

"We want to make our views known because this is an important move from the consumer's point of view because it would provide people with information to enable them to make an informed choice about using a particular business."
