Chief Executive Chosen

Dundee City Council's new chief executive is to be David Dorward, the current depute chief executive (finance).

He will take over from current chief executive Alex Stephen when he retires in October.

David joined Perth & Kinross Joint County Council in 1971, moving to Tayside Regional Council on local government reorganisation in 1975.

While at Tayside, he held a wide variety of posts and in 1994 was promoted to depute director of finance.   From 1994 to 2006 he was responsible for the Tayside Pension Funds, which are currently valued at over £1.4 billion.

In 1995 he was appointed director of finance for Dundee City Council and was involved in concluding the first local government PFI deal in Scotland - the joint venture company Dundee Energy Recycling Limited (DERL), of which he is a director, to construct and operate the Baldovie waste to energy plant.

In 2003, David’s duties within the council were extended and his post was redesignated depute chief executive (finance).

He has served on a wide variety of working groups for the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and Audit Scotland and was also chair of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

He and his wife, Gail, have lived in Dundee for 34 years. They have three daughters and two grand-daughters.
