Women's Trail
RESPONSIBILITY for the maintenance and upkeep of one of Dundee's newest historical attractions has been handed over to the city council.
The Women's Trail, marked by plaques fixed to buildings in and around the city centre, commemorates the significant contribution of women to the growth of many aspects of Dundee.
Lord Provost John Letford, who was in the City Square on Friday to mark the formal handover explained.
"When the organising committee first made its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for backing, one of the aspects it had to cover was who would maintain and repair the trail in the years to come," he said.
"As part of the application process the council agreed that it would fulfil the role and today is the day we take over that responsibility."
Mary Henderson, secretary of Dundee Women's Trail group said: "We are delighted that Dundee City Council has assumed responsibility for the trail. It is splendid that the plaques will be cared for beyond our time and that the spirit of these amazing women will live on.”
The trail, which consists of 25 bronze plaques across the city commemorating the life and times of some of Dundee’s most famous daughters, was launched in June last year, along with a leaflet, book and website.
Each of the plaques commemorates the life and achievements of a woman whose life has touched Dundee in some way, shaping and enriching not just the city, but also aspects of society, science, health and social reform and the arts.
They include Agnes Husband, one of the first female councillors in the city whose plaque is on the wall of 21 City Square; writer, lecturer and free-thinker Frances Wright and Mary Brooksbank, mill-worker, trade unionist, musician and poet.
