Trading Standards Success
Trading standards officers in Dundee have helped consumers save more than £2 million in a year.
The city council's environmental health and trading standards department was the only one from a Scottish local authority to take part in an Office of Fair Trading (OFT) pilot to look at the impact of trading standards' work.
Their report estimates that in Dundee, tackling unfair trading practices led to consumer savings of £1.9 million and advising and helping consumers a further £471,000.
City council environment services convener Councillor Jimmy Black said: "These are substantial savings that people have been able to make through the work of trading standards officers in Dundee and I am delighted that the service is helping generate figures such as these.
"The department has been able to help people get redress after they have complained about a particular product or service and by cracking down on scams and providing people with information they have been prevented from being ripped off in the first place.
"Trading standards ensure that businesses operate fairly and responsibly so that consumers are protected from harmful business practices and the financial loss that this brings."
The Office of Fair Trading reckon that work by trading standards leads to annual consumer savings of almost £350 million - that is for fair trading work only and does not include the value of work relating to other functions such as weights and measures and consumer safety.
