We'll Send Ye Tae The Mars

A fascinating glimpse into the days when the phrase "We'll Send Ye Tae The Mars" was used to get Dundee children to behave themselves will be outlined on Saturday (Nov 19).

Author Gordon Douglas, who has written about the famous training ship, will tell stories of the Mars boys at an event at the McManus Collections Unit in Barrack Street.

Built in the 1840s as a warship, the Mars was anchored in the River Tay from 1869 to 1929. It was used as a training vessel there for thousands of disadvantaged and delinquent boys.

Gordon Douglas will explain how many of these boys found a new life away from crime.

The talk starts at 10.30am and booking is essential. Phone 01382 307200 for details.

The McManus Collections Unit is operated by Leisure & Culture Dundee, working in partnership with Dundee City Council.
