Derby Street multis demolition

THE DEMOLITION of a pair of Dundee multi storey blocks could come a step closer next week.

Councillors will be asked to approve a tender from Safedem to bring down the Derby Street multis at a total cost of £2.4m.

Jimmy Black, convener of Dundee City Council's housing committee said: "The massive amount of money that was required to bring the flats in the Derby Street multis up to the Scottish Housing Quality Standard was beyond economic reach, and therefore demolition was the next best option.

"New homes have been found for the multis' tenants and work is going on to rehouse the residents of the sheltered housing blocks at Russell Place."

Work is scheduled to start on Butterburn and Bucklemaker Court in August with the contract taking a year to complete. It will also see the demolition of houses at the adjacent 1-56 Russell Place.

The housing committee meets on Monday (June 25).
