People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Deaf
The term usually used by people who have had a hearing impairment since birth. Their "first" language is normally British Sign Language.
Hard of Hearing
The term usually used by people whose hearing impairment has developed since birth. Their "first" language is normally English.
When meeting with a person with hearing loss, bear the following in mind:
- Remember to speak to the person you are meeting rather than the interpreter.
- Remember that interpreters do get tired and need a break from signing.
- If you need to catch the person's attention, you should lightly touch their shoulder or wave your hand.
