People with Impaired Mobility

When meeting with people who use wheel chairs or have restricted mobility, bear the following in mind:

  • Stand in front of them and try to place yourself at their eye level.
  • Don't move about (so that they don't have to continually change position in order to see you).
  • Talk directly to a wheelchair user, not to their companion.
  • Don't lean on a wheelchair - you are invading the body space of the user.

When arranging to meet people with impaired mobility, you should also consider:

  • Are there suitable parking facilities?
  • Is there a ramp or step-free entrance?
  • Is there a lift, if necessary?
  • Are there suitable toilet facilities?
  • Has reception been notified so that they can provide assistance if required?

If there are difficulties, contact the disabled person in advance and discuss alternatives.
