People with Impaired Speech
When meeting people with a speech impairment, bear the following in mind:
- Be encouraging, attentive and patient.
- Don't correct or speak for the person. Wait quietly while the person speaks and resist the temptation to finish sentences for them.
- Where possible, ask questions that require short answers or a nod/shake of the head.
- If you have difficulty understanding, don't pretend. Tell the person you don't understand and repeat what you do understand.
