Dock Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0140
This photograph looks westwards along Dundee's Dock Street, with the Greenmarket in the foreground and the clock tower of the Caledonian Railway's impressive Dundee West Station in the background.
The street beyond the advertising hoarding is Whitehall Crescent, with Christie's Temperance Hotel clearly visible, and the junction there with the south end of Whitehall Street just beyond, where it is just possible to make out Justice's furniture store.
The Weigh House salt store, belonging to James Cowan, stands on the corner of the Greenmarket and Dock Street. Salt remained an important commodity for decades - as well as being used as it is today, it functioned as a means of preserving fish and meat.
