High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0318
This photograph looks eastwards along Dundee's High Street, with William Spence's Clydesdale Bank building of 1876 slightly to the left of centre.
According to a notice in the Dundee Advertiser of April 1875, 'there will be pilasters all around the inside of the telling-room, with ornamental panels between, a frieze and cornice highly enriched surmounting the whole.' This can still be seen today.
Dawson & Co at No. 64 High Street, formerly known as Dawson & Carmichael, were originally at Nos. 38-42 West Port. Their advertisement in the Dundee Directory for 1894-95 says they 'always display the cheapest and best drapery goods in the city'.
