Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0397
The south side of Dundee's Murraygate is shown in this photograph running eastwards, with the foot of the Wellgate in the distance.
Robert S. Barrie, the 'mercantile stationer, printer, lithographer, bookbinder and publisher', had his printing works in the Murraygate, with the administrative offices and shop at No. 16 Panmure Street. Mr Barrie lived at Lornebank, Monifieth.
The sign for Chisholm the clothier is rather a mystery. John C. Chisholm, tailor, is listed in the Dundee Directory for 1895-96 at No. 2 Rosebank Street, but no trace of a Chisholm has been found in the Murraygate. It may simply be an advertisement.
