This photograph shows the south side of Dundee's Nethergate, with Union Street leading off to the south at the left (and east). The building on the far side of Union Street is Albion House, a clothing establishment belonging to William Phlip.
Russell's Royal Hotel stands on the opposite corner, listed in the Dundee Directory as No. 54, with George Petrie's bookshop below at No. 52 and Charles Kerr's chemist's shop at No. 56.
No. 58 is listed as Malthouse Close, home to Mrs William Steel 'hallkeeper' and George Grieve, stableman. Connell & Son, the bootmakers, were at No. 62. No. 64 is listed as McPhail, the gamekeeper, Alex Morris, basketmaker and John Thomson, grocer.
