Union Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0654

Union Street, Dundee

This photograph shows the southern end of Dundee's Union Street from the front of Caledonian Railway Station with Whitehall Crescent leading to the east and right.

It was probably taken in 1898, when demolition started in the area to make way for the improvements of Whitehall Crescent, including the erection of the new Tay Hotel, to designs by Robert Hunter, on the site occupied by Fairweathers.

The two rows of housing blocks running parallel to Union Street to its right are Couttie's Wynd and Whitehall Street; these were similarly demolished (or re-worked) as part of the commercial development which became Draffens department store.
