Yeaman Shore, Dundee - Ref: WC0743

Yeaman Shore, Dundee

Yeaman Shore is named after the wealthy Yeaman family from Dryburgh in Lochee. George Yeaman was Dundee’s Provost from 1706-8 and again from 1710-12, although normal tenure lasted only one year.

The passageway led from Nethergate in the north to the Harbour in the south. This photograph shows a detail from some carved stonework, which was typical of the exterior of many buildings in medieval Dundee.

Alexander Wilson, who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
