Yeaman Shore, Dundee - Ref: WC0745

Yeaman Shore, Dundee

Yeaman Shore was a passageway that ran south from Dundee’s Nethergate to the harbour. Originally it formed the shoreline to the Tay, but land reclamation has changed the appearance of Dundee several times.

This photograph shows some finely carved stone ornamentation which was quite common on houses in the medieval burgh of Dundee. Some was removed to the museum in the Old Steeple in the 1880s when large parts of the old town were demolished.

Alexander Wilson, who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
