"Discovery" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0806
This Alexander Wilson photograph shows one of Dundee's most famous ships, the "Discovery" on the fitting berth in the city's harbour two months after she was launched on 21st March 1901. The covered slipway upon which she was built is immediately behind.
The vessel was built for the National Antarctic Survey, which in the event last from 1901 until 1904, as she became stuck in pack ice. The "Terra Nova", a Dundee whaler, and the "Morning" effected a rescue by blasting the ice and cutting a path through.
"Discovery" was captained by Robert Falcon Scott, previously inexperienced in sailing in such locations. She returned to Dundee in 1986 to form the centrepiece of a new museum, Discovery Point.
