"Scotia" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0903
The Piper O' Dundee of 2nd October 1895 tells of the "Scotia" running aground on the 'rocky and weed-strewn strand that lies between [Arbroath's] safe harbour and [the] classic yet dangerous cliffs'.
'People going to afternoon church were surprised to see crowds of sea-soaked people,' it continues. 'Some of the castaways sought the shelter of the hotels, others took advantage of the special train "made up" with splendid enterprise by Mr Doig.
'... by the evening a good many were inclined to have a laugh over the whole matter. The 'Tiser representatives [reporters] were early on the spot, the descriptive copy ... got out so speedily that a special messenger was ... despatched en bicycle'.
