"Tantallon Castle" - Ref: WC0911
Considerable doubt surrounds this photograph, which forms part of the Alexander Wilson Collection in Dundee Central Library. The "Tantallon Castle" was not a Dundee ship, and it is almost certain that the image was not captured in the Dundee area.
Lloyd's Shipping Register for 1900-01 lists a steel ship called "Tantallon Castle", built by J Scott and Co., of Kinghorn (Fife), in 1899, and owned by the Galloway Steam Packet Company, registered at Leith.
The vessel had a gross tonnage of 393 and measured 210.1 feet in length. When Tsar Nicholas II visited Scotland in 1896, the "Tantallon Castle" took the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Connaught from Leith to greet him.
