Fishing boat in river

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows a fishing boat (towing a rowing boat) in the River Tay near Dundee. Although there is little to judge from, the stone block walkway looks like that near the current Tay Bridge railway station.

Although Dundee was very much one of the leading whaling and sealing cities in Britain, fishing played a relatively small part in the local economy, compared (for example) to the importation of jute, flax and hemp).

The fish market is listed in the Dundee Directory as a separate street. In 1888, the entries included six merchants: Leaburn, Moyes, Cook, Keiller, High (one of the leading merchants in the town at the time) and Dempster.
