Unidentified ship in Dundee Harbour

Alexander Wilson, an amateur photographer from Dundee captured this image from the pier which ran southwards from the right between Earl Grey ock (in which the ship is berthed) and the King William IV Dock (behind the viewer).

On the skyline (in the west), the clock tower of Dundee West railway station can be made out above the storage sheds, and the distinctive tower of Gilfillan Memorial church at the righthand end yard-arm.

The carved stone to the righthand side was the Royal Arch, a commemorative structure built in 1848 after Queen Victoria's visit to the city in 1844. The ship is relatively small, and was most likely used for whaling.
