This is an unusual photograph for the Dundee amateur, Alexander Wilson. While he normally took close ups of particular vessels and recorded the date, this is a more artistic image, and it may be a ship which he missed in port, or which did not call into a
The photograph shows the north Fife coast, but it is difficult to say where precisely, without the railway bridge or any buildings to help. The three masted ship is steaming, and it appears to be rigged as a barque.
Its function is obviously difficult to tell. It is unlikely to have played a role in the jute importation business, though it is possible. More likely is some function as a coastal trading vessel, perhaps bringing coal from the north east of England.
