Ships in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0943
This photograph shows a busy scene in Dundee Harbour, with everything from small sailing boats in the centre to the large three masted sailing ship on the righthand side.
Dundee's docks were always busy with whaling ships, large vessels bringing various cargos (coals from Newcastle, general goods from London and Liverpool, as well as thousands of tons of jute and the catches of the fishing and whaling fleets).
After the long voyage from India and what is today known as Bangladesh, sailing ships had to undergo repairs and re-painting, which also provided work for Dundee's labour. Ship building was also a major industry in the city at the time.
