Transport - Cab stance at City Churches - Ref: WC1005
This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows a cab stance (which may be likened to a taxi rank in today's terminology) in front of Dundee's City Churches on Nethergate.
Although referred to in various newspaper articles in Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection as 'extremely commodious', the city's cobled streets surely made for a bumpay and rather uncomfortable journey.
The cost of a trip was decided on a zone basis, with sixpence per half mile or part of a half mile outside the limits. Further charges could be levied for carrying excess baggage, or deviating from a standard route.
