Transport - Railways - West Station, Dundee (new)

This photograph shows the tihrd Dundee West railway station, located in South Union Street. Designed in the Scottish baronial style by the Caledonian Railway's chief engineer, Thomas Barr, building started in 1889 to replace the old stone structure.

The red sandstone clock tower was one of the leading features on Dundee's city skyline. Inside, a semi-circular booking office gave access to four platforms, all of which ran westwards out of the city, to Perth and thence to Glasgow or London.

Anyone wishing to travel north had to transfer to the Dundee and Arborath Railway's Dundee East Station. That station closed on 5th January 1959. Dundee West followed six years later on 25th January 1965.
