Transport - Railways - West Station, Dundee (new) - Ref: WC1040
Alexander Wilson, the manager of a jute calender (a finishing plant), took this photograph looking westwards along Whitehall Place in Dundee. The third Dundee West station was built in 1889, designed by Thomas Barr, the Caledonian Railway chief engineer.
Built of red sandstone, the structure was in the Scottish baronial style, with its clock tower dominating the skyline in South Union Street. To the left is Mather's Temperance Hotel, which was also a relatively new building.
The forecourt of the station was located on the site of the previous station. Trains from Dundee West ran to Perth and thence to Glasgow and London. Traffic for the north left from Dundee East Station, and had to be transferred by carriage.
