Transport - Railways - West Station, Dundee (new)

This photograph shows South Union Street in Dundee, with the third incarnation of Dundee West railway station on the lefthand side with its elegant red sandstone clock tower rising above Thomas Barr's Italianate three-storey structure.

The station was opened in 1889 and sttod behind the site of the second Dundee West building, which was demolished to leave a fore court. The Caledonian Railway trains ran from here to Perth and thence to London.

The building on the opposite corner (with the domed roof) is Mather's Hotel, listed in the Dundee Directory as Whitehall Place. The street leading northwards to the city churches at the left of centre is Union Street.
