Transport - Railways - West Station, Dundee (old)

This photograph from the Alexander Wilson Collection shows the second Dundee West Station, the Caledonian Railway's terminus in the city, with the third being built behind.

The Italianate two-storey stone structure was on South Union Street, with access not only to the main line to Perth, but also to the Dundee Harbour line. It was built in 1864, to replace a wooden station.

The third station (there are signs of cranes at work behind) was designed by the railway's Chief Engineer, Thomas Barr, and executed in red sandstone by Blyth and Cunningham. The new building was opened in 1889.
